From recent history, it has taken on enormous proportions in the world of collectible wines, reaching stratospheric ratings in guidebooks and being chosen as a promise of Burgundy. Respect for the terroir is evidenced by biodynamics, practiced for more than 20 years, since the era of Pascal Marchand, succeeded by Pierre Vincent (today Domaine Leflaive) to propose more ethereal wines, of delicacy and fruit purity, maintained by Sylvie Poillot . The Domaine's arsenal of vineyards is impressive. Highlight for the Clos Blanc de Vougeot, considered by Jasper Morris MW the best white on the Côte de Nuits.
Chardonnay reigns. This vineyard was a gift from Emperor Charlemagne to the canons of the church of Saint-Andoche in Saulieu. The vineyard remained in the heritage of this religious community for more than 1000 years!
Le Charlemagne (0.2183 ha) and En Charlemagne (0.2772 ha), both plots with 1950s plants, with steep slopes and silicic soils with lots of stone, limestone and soon.
Aged for 16 months in French oak barrels (Centre France), only 28% of which are new and 2 months in tanks. Little Bâtonnage and only one racking. Bottled on a fruit day. Only 3043 bottles made.
Jasper Morris 94-96 points:
“Glowing lemon yellow. There is a beautiful weight of fruit here over and above the stones, just the right fruit concentration on the palate with this lovely thread of mineral acidity, powerful in a good way, dancing notes on the stones and great length.”
Vinous 94-96 points:
“Has a well-defined and quite focused bouquet with admirable minarilité and tension. The palate is taut and fresh, impressive in terms of depth, quite focused and poised with a touch of sea salt towards the finish. Lots of energy here.
