Chilean wine can be divided into before and after Marcelo Retamal. For more than 20 years at the helm of De Martino, this revolutionary winemaker - one of the 30 most influential in the world according to Decanter in England - forever transformed the wines and the image of his country, discovering its diversity and its best terroirs. The personal project RETA was created in 2019, and brings 3 wines that synthesize all the decades of insane work vinifying grapes from hundreds and hundreds of plots from every corner of Chile. The 3 exceptional “grand crus” discovered by Marcelo during his brilliant career.
Wine:
The Romelio vineyard was planted in 1945 on uncultivated land, a rarity in the world of wine, and is a blend of several red grape varieties, although Malbec predominates. Its name is a simple tribute to the winegrower who cared for the vines from the time they were planted until he left a few years ago. The vineyard is located in the Maule Valley, in the far north, and 36 km from the Pacific Ocean, on a plateau 60 meters above sea level. The granite soils originated from the 'batholith'. costero' of the Coastal Mountain Range, which are very altered and decomposed. The highest summer temperatures never exceed 30ºC, making this a very cool terroir that is different from the rest of the country.
Fermentation of 40% whole bunches with a long, very delicate infusion of 30 days. No sulfites are used during winemaking. Aged for 27 months in 228-liter barrels of third and fourth use.
