Pierre Clair is one of the wizards of biodynamics in Burgundy, with vast experience as “chef de culture” at our Domaine Marquis d'Argerville de Volnay, and together with his wife, he manages the vineyards inherited from his family in the phenomenal Clair Obscur natural project. Natural in the purest sense of the word, achieving wines with maximum life and minimal intervention from less prestigious terroirs, but which, in the hands of those who know what they are doing, can rival the most impressive crus. The name also plays on the idea that nothing in life is completely black or white, one often has to seek balance in some shade of grey... Clair Obscur!

Origin & Terroir
Wine from the "Sur le Bois Sud" plot, located in Cheilly-lès-Maranges. The soils are predominantly sandy and the vineyard, planted in 1968, covers 0.27 hectares. A little-known terroir, but with a strong expression and unique identity in the Côte de Beaune.


Viticulture & Winemaking

  • Grape variety: 100% Pinot Noir

  • Harvest: manual, with sorting also done by hand in the vineyard

  • Fermentation: 100% whole bunches, maceration in foudre for 8 to 20 days

  • Spontaneous fermentation, without addition of SO₂

  • indigenous yeasts

  • Aging: 13 months in barrels

  • Total SO₂: < 10 mg/L

  • Residual sugar: 0

  • Bottling: December 2023


Tasting Notes
A vibrant red wine with a soft texture and fine tannins. On the nose, it offers a beautiful expression of cherry, dried leaves and damp earth. The palate is fluid, with refreshing acidity and a subtle mineral profile. A wine with a delicate expression, but with enough energy and structure to accompany rich dishes.


Style & Philosophy
This Maranges is made with a natural approach and minimal intervention, allowing the terroir to speak louder. A small-scale, old-vine wine, faithful to the artisanal spirit of Clair Obscur.

Consumption Potential
Excellent now, but can evolve gracefully for 5 to 7 years. Serve between 14–16°C.
