Pommard Clos de la Commaraine 1er Cru 2023
Domaine de la Commaraine
Certification: Biodynamic (in conversion)
Score: 93–96 pts Jasper Morris, MW
Description
Few places in Burgundy carry the historical and symbolic weight of Clos de la Commaraine, a 3.75-hectare monopole in Pommard. Farmed biodynamically, this Premier Cru reveals the most refined and precise face of the Pommard terroir, with clay-limestone soils tinged with iron oxides and an aspect facing toward Beaune.
The 2023 vintage represents the 17th release of the wine under the new ownership and marks a significant qualitative turning point: it is the first vintage to benefit from an in-depth geological study conducted by Pedro Parra and from the full adoption of biodynamic practices since 2022.
In the glass, it reveals impressive aromatic depth — wild berries and cherries wrapped in floral notes, fresh tobacco leaf, sage, graphite, and black pepper. On the palate, it is taut and elegant, with fine, limestone-driven tannins, vibrant acidity, and a persistent finish, clearly built for long aging.
A wine of authorship and terroir, combining precision and emotion, tradition and contemporary vision. Ideal for memorable moments — now or 20 years from now.
Tasting Notes (En Primeur)
“The bouquet is impressive, with the extra structure of Pommard but obviously containing a wealth of fruit. This is dark but not black fruit. There is so much to it and the structure has been perfectly judged, the plentiful tannins are very fine, the acidity adds its own useful touch while the fruit continues in serene fashion.”
