“Instead of a fruity, woody bomb, Fèlsina opted for refinement and balance,” summarize Bastianich and Lynch in the essential “Vino Italiano, The Regional Wines of Italy”. The unbeatable duo of Giuseppe Mazzocolin, a former professor of Greek and Latin, and the fantastic winemaker Franco Bernabei have been focusing on Sangiovese, to the detriment of international varieties, since the early 1980s. Fontalloro was one of the first 100% Sangiovese Super Tuscans, launched in 1983, and has been a Tuscan icon ever since. For those who love ultra-traditional Chianti, the Poggiali family also produces the classic Pagliarese on another dream estate.
Wine:
The vineyards of this Chianti Classico Berardenga are located in Castelnuovo Berardenga, in the southeastern part of the Chianti Classico appellation, southeast of Siena. Almost exclusively with a southwestern exposure, they spread over ventilated slopes at an altitude ranging from 320-420 meters above sea level. Geologically, the terrains are mixed: in the higher parts the soil is predominantly of rocky quartz and alberese limestone mixed with alluvial pebbles; sandstone and clay characterize the vineyards on the edge of the Colli Senesi towards the Crete Senesi. Aging in medium-sized Slovenian oak barrels, and a small percentage in oak barrels used twice and three times; 12 months of maturation in total.
