Marjan Simčič Ribolla Gialla Cru Selection 2020
Brda, Slovenia
100% Ribolla Gialla • Organic / Biodynamic practices
Producer
Marjan “was the key to the success of the Goriška Brda region” — when, at just 20 years old, he took over the historic family winery (founded in 1860) and, according to Decanter magazine, “transformed the region’s profile, raising it to the top level nationally and internationally.”
Brda boasts a fantastic terroir where the Alps meet the Mediterranean, with “flysch” soils of marl and limestone, known locally as Opoka. Marjan is a true force of nature — crafting wines of great authenticity and minerality, unmissable for terroir-driven explorers.
Description
The Ribolla Gialla Cru Selection 2020 is a white wine of remarkable character and depth, crafted from old vines (30 to 60 years) planted in the Medana Jama and Jordano Cru plots, at altitudes of 200–250 metres on northwest-facing slopes with poor marl, slate, and sandstone soils (Opoka).
In the glass, it shows a bright antique gold hue. The nose is layered and complex, with aromas of baked apple, marmalade, subtle spice, orange zest, and biscuit crumbs. The palate is intense and structured, with vibrant acidity balancing notes of stone fruit, peach, and gentle spice, leading to a persistent, salty finish.
Thanks to the low yields and old vines, this cuvée clearly elevates the complexity and presence within the Ribolla range of the estate.
