The Algarve’s most exciting and authentic wines and the largest collection of old organically grown vines in the region are available at this family farm founded in early 1810 by the 1st Count of Silves. Joana Maçanita and the 4th generation of the family, represented by Filipe Caldas de Vasconcellos, work exclusively with indigenous grape varieties and yeasts, and use ancestral or minimal intervention methods to rediscover the Algarve’s potential. At another historic 12th century farm in Tomar, the family, advised by João Nunes, is just as passionate about recreating the wines created by the Marquise of Tomar in the 19th century.
Morgado do Quintão Castelão 2020 is a small-production Portuguese red wine (only 1056 bottles), produced in Algarve from Castellan, one of the most traditional grape varieties in southern Portugal. Hand-harvested and fermented under controlled temperature, this wine expresses all the character of the Algarve Mediterranean terroir, with a contemporary touch provided by the winemaker Joana Maçanita.
After 15 days of contact with the skins, the wine aged for 15 months in French oak barrels, gaining complexity, structure and elegance.
Tasting Notes
Deep aromas of dark red fruits, plums in compote and notes of spices, with subtle suggestions of dark chocolate. In the mouth it is structured, with fine tannins and a warm aftertaste, perfect for rich dishes and intense flavors.
