Description
The Mullineux Schist Syrah 2020 comes from a single block of 22-year-old vines planted in stony schist and schist-clay soils at Roundstone Farm on the slopes of the Kasteelberg. In these harsh, nutrient-poor soils, the vines produce small, concentrated berries, resulting in a Syrah with firm tannins, depth and intense mineral structure.

Fermented with whole bunches in open 500L barrels, foot-trodden, and with native yeasts, the wine undergoes a four-week maceration. It is then aged for 12 months in 500L French oak barrels (50% new), followed by 10 months in second-use foudre. Bottled unfiltered and unfined, it rests a further 8 months in bottle before release.

A serious, age-worthy Syrah with precision, power and strong mineral character.

Tasting notes
Tightly wound and brooding on the nose, with layers of black fruit, graphite, black pepper and wild forest spice. The palate is powerful and structured, with nervy freshness and dense tannins echoing the schist soils. A Syrah built for the cellar — precise, complex and full of personality.
