Chilean wine can be divided into before and after Marcelo Retamal. For more than 20 years at the head of De Martino, this revolutionary winemaker - one of the 30 most influential in the world by the English Decanter - forever transformed the wines and the image of his country, discovering its diversity and its best terroirs. The personal project RETA emerged in 2019, and brings 3 wines that synthesize all the decades of insane work to vinify grapes from hundreds and hundreds of plots from all corners of Chile. The 3 exceptional “grand crus” discovered by Marcelo in his brilliant trajectory.
Wine:
The Romelio vineyard was planted in 1945 in open foot, a rarity in the world of wine, and mixes several red varieties, however, Malbec predominates. Its name is a simple tribute to the winegrower who took care of the vines from the time they were planted until the moment he left a few years ago. The vineyard is located in the Maule Valley, in the extreme north, and 36 km from the Pacific Ocean, on a plateau at an altitude of 60 meters. The granitic soils originated from the 'coastal batholith' of the Cordillera da Costa, which are very altered and decomposed. The highest summer temperatures never exceeded 30ºC, making this terroir very fresh and different from the rest of the country.
Fermentation of 40% whole bunches with a long infusion, very delicate, lasting 30 days. No sulphites are used during winemaking. Aged for 27 months in 228-liter barrels of third and fourth use.
