The premier cru of Mareuil-sur-Aÿ carries with it the prestige of producing some of the most imposing and vibrant wines in Champagne, such as Philipponnat’s Clos des Goisses. It is on these steep hillsides that Jean-Paul Hébrart offers us an intimate vision of the region, crafting Champagnes that are creamy and fruit-driven, yet firmly anchored in the piercing minerality and local race of the terroir. It is very likely that the dynamic and generous style of this wonderful producer will strike the heart of all, regardless of their level of experience with terroir-driven Champagnes.

Marc Hébrart “Clos de Léon” 1er Cru Extra Brut 2018
Champagne, France
Grape variety: 100% Chardonnay
Classification: Premier Cru – Dizy
Farming practice: Organic (in conversion)

Clos de Léon is a rare jewel of Champagne — a walled micro-parcel (a true clos) in Dizy 1er Cru, with steep slopes and pure chalk soils. This 100% Chardonnay expresses with precision the tense, mineral terroir of the Marne Valley, combined with the delicacy of artisanal winemaking.

Fermented and aged in used 300 L barrels, with full malolactic fermentation, the wine rests for 72 months on fine lees, developing a silky texture and remarkable complexity. Bottled with a dosage of 3 g/L, it is released as Extra Brut, dry and gastronomic in style.

In the glass, it shows a bright lemon-yellow color, with a fine, well-integrated bead. On the nose, notes of lemon peel, tangerine oil, mint, dried herbs, and struck flint. On the palate, it combines power and finesse, with a discreet mousse, a long finish, and a deeply saline character.
