Producer

Spain’s most fascinating, awarded, and coveted domaine tells the story of an inspired vigneron: Jorge Monzón. After two years working alongside Bernard Noblet at the legendary Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, followed by one year at Vega Sicilia and ten more at Arzuaga Navarro, Jorge returned to his native village of La Aguilera in Ribera del Duero. With great humility and brilliance, Jorge assembled the region’s finest old vines and, through his talent, meticulous pursuit of excellence, and vision for reviving Ribera’s ancient traditions, is now producing some of the greatest whites, claretes, and reds in modern Spanish history.

Wine

Pícaro del Águila Tinto 2022 is a vibrant, authentic red wine from Dominio del Águila, a family-run winery founded in 2010 by Jorge Monzón and Isabel Rodero in La Aguilera, Ribera del Duero. The winery is renowned for its artisanal approach and deep respect for local traditions.

Brilliant cherry-red in colour. On the nose, intense aromas of ripe red fruits — cherries and raspberries — mingle with floral violet notes and a mineral touch. On the palate, the wine is fresh, flavourful, with juicy tannins, bright acidity, and a long, persistent finish.

Score

Robert Parker – Wine Advocate: 94 points
“The 2022 Pícaro del Águila Tinto has similar parameters to the 2021 (14% alcohol), but the sensation is of greater ripeness. Surprisingly, it has a lower pH than the 2021, which I tasted side by side; they used more white grapes for added freshness and more other varieties. It shows dry, chalky tannins that reflect the terroir, which is remarkable for such a hot, dry vintage. This is more serious, while the 2021 is more approachable. A triumph over the vintage.”
