Description
We wanted so much to meet StΓ©phane Riffault in person that we rerouted an entire trip just to taste his electrifying wines with him at the Biodyvin fair in Paris. The reason is simple: StΓ©phane is now one of the finest vignerons in Sancerre and the Loire β a biodynamic master who takes risks in the cellar to showcase the unique expressions of his diverse terroirs: Kimmeridgian marl (Boucauds), limestone (Chasseignes), and flint (Chailloux), vinified in concrete or large wooden vats, always with drama and precision.
Les Chailloux 2023 comes from a rare geological fault that cuts through the medieval village of Sancerre, running parallel to the Loire. This ancient terroir preserves Tertiary deposits rich in flint, sand, clay, limestone and gravel. On this bed of hard stone, Claude Riffault crafts his most austere and precise interpretation of Sauvignon Blanc.
Flint-based Sancerre is known for its extreme tension, compact texture, and a searing, stony minerality. Here, fruit steps aside for aromas of flint strike, crushed rock and an uncompromising acidity that promises great ageing potential.
This is a Sancerre for contemplation and precision β the perfect reflection of Claude Riffaultβs commitment to biodynamics and pure terroir expression.
