Miani Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso 2021
Friuli Colli Orientali – Italy
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Description
The stark contrast between one of the most spartan cellars in Friuli and some of the country’s (and some say the world’s) most stunning vineyards — cultivated like a garden and framed by the Julian Alps — already hints at what you’ll find in these cult Italian wines: pure terroir, minimal intervention. The calloused hands and sunburnt face of the brilliant Enzo Pontoni reveal a true vigneron — a luminous farmer quietly crafting the finest white wines in all of Italy.
The name Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso may sound rustic, but in the hands of Enzo Pontoni, this red takes on another dimension: elegance, tension, and depth that transcend the traditional style of the grape.
After ending production of the legendary Calvari Cru in 2015, Enzo began a new chapter with vineyards on the hills of Cossut (above Baracca) and La Mont di Zuc — the latter one of the region’s highest sites at 250 metres altitude, where the air is thinner and the wind sharper. In "normal" years, the fruit from these two parcels is vinified together, creating a Refosco that continues the house style: power with subtlety, structure with precision.
Aged for two years in new French oak barrels, the wine reveals deep black fruit, firm texture, polished tannins, and a mineral vibration that echoes the granite and quietude of Friuli’s vineyards.
An austere, expressive red that features on the wine lists of cult restaurants and in private collections worldwide.
