Description
The Ramilo family has been rooted in Colares since the mid-19th century. Today, brothers Nuno and Pedro, the fourth generation, are reviving this historic but nearly forgotten appellation, once famed for wines of great longevity. Together with winemaker Jorge Mota, they are reclaiming traditional vineyards in two distinct sites: sandy soils at Azenhas do Mar and firmer terrain in the Lizandro River Valley β both battered by the cool, salty Atlantic winds.
How many of the worldβs great wines age like a Colares? How many Colares taste like a Ramilo?
From ungrafted vines planted mere steps from the ocean. Organic viticulture β no certification yet, but full of soul. Malvasia de Colares, distinct and unique among its kin. Grapes are harvested at dawn, with great care and precision. The wine is aged 18 months in French oak barrels, showing an impressive total acidity of 7.3 g/L and low SOβ (only 40 mg/L).
Aromatic depth and elegance: subtle spice, a hint of orange peel, restrained intensity. No overt sweetness β just pure, vivid character. On the palate: tension, slight tannic grip, and vibrant acidity that awakens the senses. Saline, almost briny, with a finish recalling yeast and sea breeze.
This is a wine that defies simple explanation β complex, vibrant, firm in texture, broad in flavour, yet without any oxidation. With great persistence and singular personality, it is at once a shock and a harmony. A rare, profoundly Atlantic white, impossible to forget.
