Coessens Largillier Extra-Brut Exogyre (NV)
Extra-Brut Champagne | Pinot Noir | Ville-sur-Arce (Aube)
93 Points – Robert Parker Wine Advocate
The Producer
Jérôme Coessens is a defining name of the new generation of Champagne. Farming a single lieu-dit, Largillier, he produces Champagnes of enormous identity, depth and saline character. Before releasing wine under his own name, he supplied grapes to the prestigious Guillaume Selosse cuvée, a collaboration that lasted until 2021.
Origin and Philosophy
This Champagne comes exclusively from the renowned Largillier monopole in Ville-sur-Arce, planted with Pinot Noir on kimmeridgian soils, similar to those of Chablis, which give it great minerality and freshness. Exogyre is a perpetual reserve blend started in 2006 and updated annually with the best harvests, including 2020. This wine reflects the meticulous work of Jérôme Coessens, who converted the estate to organic farming (certified in 2021) and stopped using herbicides in 2010.
Tasting Notes
On the nose, aromas of mirabelle plum, cherry, orange peel and rye bread. On the palate, it is medium to full bodied, with rich texture, vibrant acidity and an aromatic finish. Despite its historical complexity (built on a base of more than 15 harvests), it remains lively, harmonious and full of energy. The mousse is creamy yet precise, and the finish is dry and persistent.
