Monte da Penha Red 2013

Alentejo – Portugal

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

The Producer

Monte da Penha is a project located in Portalegre, in the Alto Alentejo, one of the most distinctive areas of the region. The altitude, ranging between 400 and 600 metres, combined with granitic and clay-limestone soils, allows for wines with freshness, elegance and significant ageing potential.

Winemaking is led by Susana Esteban, named Winemaker of the Year by Revista de Vinhos, whose approach focuses on expressing terroir and achieving balance between structure and freshness, key elements of the finest wines from Portalegre.

The Wine

Monte da Penha Red 2013 is a classic Alentejo red with elegant evolution, awarded 88 points by Robert Parker. Produced from a blend of 35% Trincadeira, 25% Aragonez, 20% Touriga Nacional and 20% Alicante Bouschet, it shows a profile marked by freshness and tertiary complexity.

In the glass, it displays a bright ruby colour. The nose stands out for its floral expression and red fruit notes, accompanied by evolved, earthy and subtly spicy nuances. On the palate, it offers good structure, notable freshness and lively tannins, balancing elegance with a touch of rusticity typical of high-altitude Portalegre wines.

Fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks with temperature control and indigenous yeasts, enhancing the wine’s authenticity. Ageing included 30% of the volume in French Allier oak barrels for 12 months, with the remainder kept in stainless steel, preserving fruit purity while integrating oak with subtlety.

With a limited production of around 28,300 bottles, this wine stands out as an excellent choice for those seeking Alentejo wines with evolution, freshness and character.
