Producer
Morgado do Quintão is home to some of the Algarve's most authentic and compelling wines, as well as the region's largest collection of organically farmed old vines. This historic family estate, founded in the early 19th century by the 1st Count of Silves, is today led by Joana Maçanita and fourth-generation family member Filipe Caldas de Vasconcellos.
Working exclusively with indigenous Portuguese grape varieties, native yeasts and a philosophy of minimal intervention, they are redefining the potential of Algarve wines through a profound respect for the region's heritage and terroir.
Wine
Morgado do Quintão Vinhas Velhas Branco 2023 is produced from a single parcel of approximately 50-year-old Crato Branco vines, one of the estate's historic vineyards. Released in a highly limited production, it showcases the variety's most elegant, fresh and mineral expression.
The grapes are hand-harvested and the wine is aged for six months, with half matured in neutral oak barrels and half in stainless steel tanks. This approach preserves the purity of the fruit while adding texture and complexity.
The nose reveals aromas of lemon zest, white peach, orange blossom and wet stone. On the palate, it is defined by vibrant tension, a silky texture and refined minerality, finishing dry, long and remarkably elegant.
Far removed from the traditional perception of rich, sun-driven Algarve whites, this wine offers a refined, precise and distinctly gastronomic profile, establishing itself as one of the region's most serious and exciting white wines.
The 2022 vintage was named Best White Wine of Portugal at the Wines of Portugal Awards 2025, an extraordinary achievement for both the estate and the Algarve wine region. The 2023 vintage is currently awaiting reviews from international critics but follows the same philosophy, vineyard sources and uncompromising standards that made its predecessor such a benchmark.
