Cortinha Velha Alvarinho Sobre Lias 2024 is a limited-production white wine that showcases the remarkable depth and ageing potential of Alvarinho from Monção e Melgaço. Produced by the Covas family in the renowned village of Cambeses, this wine reflects generations of dedication to one of Portugal's most celebrated white grape varieties and a commitment to meticulous vineyard and cellar work.
Cortinha Velha is a small family estate producing approximately 15,000 bottles annually, focusing on terroir-driven wines that express the unique identity of Monção e Melgaço. Every decision, from vineyard management to winemaking and presentation, is guided by precision, patience and respect for tradition.
Often described as a "liquid mille-feuille", Alvarinho Sobre Lias 2024 is a wine built on subtle layers rather than immediate exuberance. It is crafted with minimal intervention, allowing time and lees ageing to shape its character naturally.
Following complete destemming and gentle direct pressing, the wine ferments in stainless steel tanks where it remains for 12 months on its full fermentation lees without bâtonnage. This patient ageing process creates a wine of remarkable texture, structure and complexity while preserving the purity and precision of the fruit.
The nose is restrained and elegant, revealing delicate aromas of lime, white peach and a subtle flinty note reminiscent of dry gunpowder. On the palate, it combines tension, concentration and a creamy texture, supported by vibrant acidity and a pronounced saline minerality. The finish is long, vertical and persistent, reflecting both the granite soils of the region and the wine's exceptional ageing potential.
Produced in limited quantities, Cortinha Velha Alvarinho Sobre Lias 2024 is a serious and contemplative expression of Alvarinho, offering a sophisticated alternative to more fruit-forward styles and rewarding both immediate enjoyment and cellaring.
Food Pairing
An excellent match for salt-baked sea bass, octopus, oysters, clams and other shellfish. It also pairs beautifully with vegetable tempura, mushroom dishes, roast chicken with fresh herbs and aged goat cheeses.
